Guangdong General Hospital

Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital (Guangdong Provincial Academy of Medical Sciences) was established in 1946. Its comprehensive strength ranks among the best in China. The source of patients covers both domestic and overseas, and it is deeply trusted by the general public. In 2008, the Guangdong Academy of Medical Sciences resumed its listing and co-organized with the Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital. In 2014, it signed a cooperation agreement with South China University of Technology to build the School of Medicine of South China University of Technology and the First Clinical College of South China University of Technology. In 2017, the “Guangdong Provincial People’s Hospital Affiliated to South China University of Technology” was listed.

The hospital has a complete set of subspecialties of various specialties, including 12 national key clinical specialties and 34 key clinical medicine specialties/disciplines of Guangdong Province. Our hospital’s 2019 National Best Hospital Ranking (Fudan Edition) comprehensively ranks 31st, ranking in the forefront of provincial people’s hospitals in the country; a total of 5 specialties ranked among the top ten in the country: Cardiac Surgery (5th), Cardiovascular Diseases (No. 6), Geriatrics (No. 6), Emergency Medicine (No. 8), Radiology (No. 9). Our hospital has completed a total of 209 heart transplants since 1998, and successfully carried out intrapartum fetal cardiac surgery for the first time in the world, and successfully carried out fetal cardiac interventional treatment for the first time in China. It has long-term responsibility for cadre health care and is the most important geriatric research and cadre health care base in South China.

The overall scientific research strength of the hospital is strong, with outstanding achievements in iconic scientific research projects. Since the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan”, it has won 1 second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, 21 provincial science and technology awards, and 1 first prize of China Medical Science and Technology Award. In 2015-2020, 271 patents were authorized, 1025 government vertical projects were undertaken, 5 national key R&D projects and 21 topics were undertaken. Published 2085 SCI papers with a total IF value of 8185.592 points. 90 articles with an IF score of 10 or more. It has 5 key laboratories (4 provincial key laboratories and 1 department key laboratory). From 2006 to 2020, it will undertake 1,020 registered clinical trials for the purpose of listing. In 2020, the clinical trial contract funds will be 85.67 million yuan.

As the teaching hospital of higher medical schools in Guangdong Province, it has undertaken theoretical teaching and internship teaching tasks in many universities such as South China University of Technology, Southern Medical University, Sun Yat-sen University, and Shantou University. It is one of the earliest training bases in Guangdong Province to carry out standardized training for residents and general practitioners, and there are 27 national standardized training bases for residents. There are currently 7 pilot bases for standardized training of specialist physicians, including cardiovascular disease, respiratory and critical care medicine, internal medicine and geriatrics, general surgery, internal critical care medicine, surgical critical care medicine, and neonatal perinatal medicine. In the past five years, 284 national continuing medical education projects have been approved, and 23 appropriate technology promotion projects have been carried out for primary hospitals in the past five years.

The hospital has very active external exchanges and cooperation. It has successively established academic exchanges and scientific research cooperation relationships with the Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, Massachusetts General Hospital, Australia, Israel and other famous medical institutions in many countries and regions.

At present, our institute has 2 “Changjiang Scholars” Distinguished Professors from the Ministry of Education, 2 winners of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, 3 young and middle-aged experts who have made outstanding contributions to the National “Hundred-Ten Thousand Project”, 1 Chinese Academy of Sciences Hundred Talents Program, and National Excellent 3 young people, 1 cross-century outstanding talent from the Ministry of Education, 4 young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions to national health and family planning, 2 Zhujiang scholars, and 33 people enjoying special government allowances from the State Council. 66 people hold leadership positions in national societies and subordinate institutions. There are 80 doctoral supervisors and 212 master supervisors. In the past five years, 1126 doctoral and master students have been trained for the country.
