St Mary’s Hospital London is located in Paddington, North West London. It serves as the major acute centre for North West London and runs one of London’s four major trauma centres along with a 24 hour Accident & Emergency department. It also provides medical care, surgery, critical care, maternity, children and young people’s services, end of life care and outpatient services.
St Mary’s Hospital is part of Imperial College academic health science centre, established along with other academic health centres to bring together universities and healthcare providers together to focus on research and to ensure that the benefits of medical breakthroughs are passed on to the patients. Imperial College healthcare operates five major hospitals across London.
The Hospital also forms part of the globally recognised Imperial College School of Medicine, which ranks among the best in the world in terms of research and education.
Established in 1845, it was the last voluntary hospital to be set up in London. In 1928, Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin in his laboratory in the basement of the hospital. In more recent times, St Mary’s became the birth place of Prince George and Princess Charlotte, the children of Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge.
