The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University is a comprehensive 3A hospital, integrating medical treatment, teaching, research, health care, rehabilitation and pre-hospital care together. It harbors Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Disease, Guangdong key laboratories on orthopedic technique and implant materials and Guangdong key laboratories on urology. It was named Hospital Franco-Chinois Paul Doumer. Since New China was founded in 1949, our hospital changed its name to the Workers Hospital in Guangzhou and the Fourth People’s Hospital in Guangzhou, Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical College in 1974, the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical College in 1981 and the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University in 2013 subsequently.

The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University situated at Pearl River, western to Haizhu square. The Haiyin Branch of First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou Medical University located in the south banks of the Pearl River, southern to the Haiyin Bridge. Over 1500 ward beds are available here, serving 37 clinical departments, 18 medical laboratories. The hospital owns over 2800 staffs, including 1 member of Chinese Academy of engineering, 20 experts with outstanding contribution to the state council or province and municipality levels, over 460 senior professionals and over 2300 professionals & technical staffs.

As an affiliated hospital of a university, we focus on professional training as well as discipline construction. We have 6 national clinical key specialties: respiratory medicine, thoracic surgery, urinary surgery, intensive medicine, allergology, and oncology; 1 state key discipline of internal medicine (respiratory disease); 1 national key specialty of drug administration bureau (lung disease treated by traditional Chinese medicine combined with western medicine); 1 national key laboratory (state key laboratory of respiratory diseases); 21 provincial clinical key specialties: respiratory medicine, thoracic surgery, urology surgery, intensive medicine, clinical medicine combined with traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine, gynecology, hematology, cardiovascular medicine, otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, laboratory medicine, neurology, emergency medicine; 2 provincial key disciplines: surgery and pediatrics; 3 provincial key laboratories: Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Disease, Guangdong key laboratories on orthopedic technique and implant materials, Guangdong key laboratories on urology. Since 2001, our hospital has developed 3 programs supported by the “973” Project (the national development project on key basic research); 3 research projects supported by the National Key Technology Research and Development Program of China during the “10th Five-Year Plan”, 1 project during the “11th Five-Year Plan” and 2 projects during the “12th Five-Year Plan”; seven programs funded by the “863” program (National High-tech R&D Program of China); 166 programs funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). We got totally 76 items of Science and Technology National Award.

Zhong Nanshan, the academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, was rewarded as a national model worker and Bethune medal (blue ribbon in Chinese health system). In 2011, the innovative research team on respiratory disease prevention and control, led by Guangzhou Institute of Respiratory Disease, was rewarded with the first medical achievement medal in Southern Canton, Guangdong province.
