Beijing Shijitan Hospital (the original Beijing Railway General Hospital), founded in 1915, affiliated to Capital Medical University, is celebrating its centennial! As Capital Medical University Cancer Center, the Ninth Clinical Medical College of Peking University, the hospital is one of the well-established top level comprehensive hospitals integrated with mediccal treatment, teaching, research and prophylaxis in Beijing. In 1989, the hospital got the first national approval of top grade class A hospital. In the coming years, it has been conferred as One of 100 best general hospitals in China by Ministry of Health, One of Top Ten Hospitals by Ministry of Railways, Baby Friendly Hospital by WHO, Double Top Ten People’s Hospitals by Beijing Municipal Health Bureau. Since 2001, the hospital was awarded as the central state organs and municipal level civilized unit in Beijing and reputed as Medical Insurance Designated Class A Hospital in 2008. In the year of 2013, the hospital as the core unit, led to form the Shijitan Hospital Medical Consortium; and was awarded national-level Best Collective for Foreign Health Aid, Therapeutic Cancer Vaccines Lab was named as the Beijing Key Lab; the hospital was firstly approved as the national GP Standardized Training Base and Beijing Municipal Health Promotion Model Base. In 2014, it became the authorized hospital for emergency treatment of pregnant and lying-in women. In 2015, it got award of Top Ten Hospitals for standardized training of resident doctors, Beijing International Sci-Tech Cooperation Base for Cancer Immunotherapy, and Beijing Key Lab of Urine Cell and Molecular Diagnosis. The hospital has established close collaborations with Duke University, Cardiff University and Chicago Advocate Christ Medical Center in terms of medical research and talent training; and partnership project with Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Center, Hamburg University, established the Translational Cancer Research Center jointly with Beijing Institute of Basic Medicine.

The hospital, near China Millennium Monument, is situated north of Beijing West Railway Station, covers an area of 72,800 square meters with a construction area of over 100,000 square meters, and a fixed assets of 1 billion RMB (approximately 157 million USD)

There are 1100 beds in 54 clinical departments and 8 technical & laboratory departments with such advanced equipment as 256-slice Philips iCT, 3.0 T MRI and linear accelerator, etc. There are 2300 staff, and nearly 100 nationwide famous experts, over 300 professionals with senior technical titles, more than 500 with master and PhD or postdoc at the hospital.

The hospital’s key disciplines are: medical oncology, Internal medicine of TCM, allergy, GI and hepatobiliary surgical oncology, peritoneal surgical oncology, gastroenterolgy, clinical laboratory; the key development disciplines are: cardiology, interventional therapy, obstetrics and gynecology, vascular surgery, colorectal surgical oncology, neurology and psychiatry, spine surgery, respiratory medicine, pharmacy; the featured disciplines are: lymphatic surgery, geriatrics, anesthesiology, ENT/head & neck surgery, neurosurgery and glioma.

Cancer Center is the earliest established comprehensive cancer with complete disciplines in China. In 2008, Capital Medical University authorized to establish Faculty of Oncology and Cancer Center, which has 9 clinical departments, 1 cancer research lab and 1 translational research center, staffed with famous oncologists. Based on 5 such platforms as Beijing Key Lab of Therapeutic Cancer Vaccines, Cancer Immunotherapy Research Center, Beijing Cancer Institute of Chinese and Western Integrative Medicine, Phase I Cancer Drug Clinical Trial Center and Central Lab, the cancer center has been developing into a comprehensive center, featured with cancer early detection, early diagnosis, surgical management, chemo combined with immunotherapy, interventional therapy and and Chinese and Western integrated treatment, multi-disciplinary treatment and minimally invasive therapy; and has come out top of cancer basic and clinical research in China.

Internationally well-known Peritoneal Surgery Diagnosis and Treatment Center first started the standardized cytoreducdtive surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, which improved the patients’ survival rate substantially.

Gastroendoscopic Diagnosis and Treatment Center carried out the early diagnosis and treatment for esophageal, gastric, colorectal cancers and precancerous lesions with highly accurate skills earlier in China.

In recent years, tumor minimally invasive therapy has developed rapidly, and holds a leading position in China for treating gastric, colorectal, hepatobiliary, gynecological, respiratory, neurological and urinary tumors with endoscopic techniques. Besides, the hospital also provides personalized tailored proper diagnosis and treatment options/schemes for head and neck tumor, bone tumor, ultra-low rectal tumor, breast tumor, glioma, solid tumor in children and hematological malignancies.

The hospital focuses Oncology as the core development discipline, meanwhile, great achievements have also been made in other disciplines. Allergy got the support of National Key Clinical Discipline Construction Programs of China in 2013. The clinical research of pollen allergy, food allergy and difficult and miscellaneous allergies is geared to international standards, and has formed a well-known brand. Diabetes and endocrine in Internal medicine of TCM are two National Key Clinical Discipline Construction Programs supported by State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. They are actively establishing Beijing Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Center by Chinese and Western Integrative Medicine. Clinical Laboratory is Beijing Key Lab of Urine Cell and Molecular Diagnosis, passed National ISO175025 recognition and ISO15189 medical laboratory accreditation, recognized and calibrated by CAP. Lymphatic surgery is the first specialized discipline in China for diagnosing and treating lymphatic duct diseases, and diagnosis and treatment for lymphedema and chylous reflux are in the international lead. Pharmacy goes ahead in its industry in terms of hospital preparations, clinical pharmaceutical research, digitalized pharmacy, automated drug dispensing and precise preparations.

Ge’s Pinching Sinew and Tapping Manipulation at the Department of Traditional Chinese Orthopedics and Traumatology has been awarded as the national intangible cultural heritage, enjoying prestige at home and abroad. The hospital also focuses on building many featured medical therapies like interventional therapy of coronary heart disease, super-early thrombolysis and endovascular therapy for acute cerebral infarction, surgical treatment of obesity and diabetes, rescue treatment for gynecological endocrine disease and high risk pregnant and lying-in women, Geriatrics comprehensive assessment and anesthesia surgery for aged patients, minimally invasive treatment for hydrocephalus, comprehensive treatment of peripheral angiopathy, orthopedic and anorectal surgery of TCM.

The hospital has 36 doctorate and master degree granting disciplines, 1 postdoc research station, 12 resident doctors training bases granted by municipal government, drug clinical trial center is accredited by Ministry of Health. To support and facilitate clinical practice and research, the hospital is instituted with clean grade animal laboratory, molecular biological lab, pathomorphology lab, blood lab and cancer research lab. in recent 5 years, there have been 237 granted scientific research projects of ministry or state level, 1349 academic articles published, among which, 174 papers in SCI journals with average annual growth rate of 25.6%, and got many scientific and technological progress awards of ministry or state level. There are over 1000 undergraduates, postgraduates and interns from Peking University Medical Center and Capital Medical University.
