At times in our life we may experience situations or a crisis that can lead to unusual moods and/or behaviours, which can be a precursor for the onset of depression. Depression is the most common psychiatric disorder, known to decrease quality of life. It can also have a negative impact on your job, family life, workplace and day-to-day activity. There are many triggers for depression and if you are suffering from the following symptoms regularly and consistently, we encourage you to seek one of our specialist practitioners for a health check.

Chronic pain.

Unexplained physical symptoms.

Recent life changes or stressors.

Fair or poor self-rated health.

Further, if you’re experiencing five or more of the following symptoms most of the day, nearly every day, for a minimum of two consecutive weeks it is usually a ‘red flag’ for depression.

Depressed mood.

Suicidal thoughts.

Loss of interest or pleasure in most or all activities.

Insomnia or hypersomnia.

Change in appetite or weight.

Psychomotor retardation or agitation.

Low energy.

Poor concentration.

Prior depressive episodes.

Family history.

Female gender.

Childbirth (i.e., postpartum or post-natal depression).

Childhood trauma.

Stressful life events.

Poor social support.

Serious medical illness.

Substance abuse.

Recommended by the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), is to screen all patients during routine visits and then further evaluate those who score above a specified threshold.  If you suspect you may have depression, please do not hesitate to make an appointment with a medical specialist at the earliest opportunity.
